Jesuits West statement regarding the release of names

Dear St. Aloysius parish,

I want to inform you today Dec 7, 2018 the USA West Province of the Society of Jesus (“Jesuits West”) published a list of the names of Jesuits with credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults, dating back to 1950.  The release included a republishing of the list from the 2011 Oregon Province bankruptcy of Jesuits who had allegations that were not able to be investigated or verified.  This list, some FAQs, and a statement and video message from the Provincial Scott Santarosa, S.J., are posted on the province website www.JesuitsWest.org.

Jesuits West Province is one of a number of provinces and regions that make up the worldwide Society of Jesus, its geographical area encompasses the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.  The Provincial missions Jesuits to work at institutions in the Spokane region, including St. Aloysius Parish.

There are names of Jesuit priests on this list who may have helped at St. Aloysius while being assigned to Gonzaga U, Gonzaga Prep, or Regis Jesuit Community, which was the Jesuit retirement community and Infirmary located here.  I am encouraged by the Province’s decision to release this list in an effort toward greater transparency and support the Provincial, Fr. Scott Santarosa’s efforts to do so.

St. Aloysius prays for the healing of those who have been abused and victimized by abusive individuals.  We are committed to the protection of our children and the ongoing love and care for them and all members of our community.  We resolve to seek justice with and for them.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at tlamanna@dioceseofspokane.org.

Sincerely,

Fr. Thomas J. Lamanna, S.J.

Pastor
